Recently completed Mascari Warner Architects’ (formerly Childs Mascari Warner Architects) project, Rady Children’s Hospital Autism Clinic and Child Care Center celebrated its grand opening with an open house on January 13, 2011, with over 70 donors in attendance.

Rady Children’s Hospital provides educational programs for children with or at-risk for autism spectrum disorders. Formerly called the Child Care Center and Toddler School, Alexa’s PLAYC (Playful Learning Academy for Young Children) is a facility that provides a nurturing environment that stimulates social, physical and intellectual growth.

Vibrant and inviting, yet soothing colors were selected to simultaneously stimulate and comfort the children, while playful design elements such as porthole windows offer opportunities for imagination and interaction.

Mascari Warner Architects performed designed tenant improvements to the existing facility in two phases. Phase one consisted of the demolition and renovation of approximately 4,500 SF and of diagnostic rooms, treatment rooms, gym, waiting area, office and a small kitchen. Phase two consisted of the demolition and renovation of approximately 800 SF and included a testing room, conference room and a staff work room.

Mascari Warner Architects (formerly Childs Mascari Warner Architects) is pleased to announce our “Best in Show” win at this year’s IIDA Fashion Show in San Diego. The Southern California Chapter of the International Interior Design Association invited design and architecture firms to create fashions for the 2010 show, themed “Haute Couture,” using industrial materials exclusively from vendor sponsors. Mascari Warner Architects, teaming with Aesthetics Inc., took a cue from the regal peacock to create a vintage-inspired runway gown. Our sponsors included Nemschoff, a healthcare furniture manufacturer, and Sherwin Williams, a paint manufacturer. Dress construction incorporated the following resources from our sponsors:

Upholstery fabric for bodice, corset, skirt, and “tail feathers”

Mesh fabric for petticoat

Wood veneer for “tail feathers”

Paint chips for “tail feathers”

Paint stir sticks framing the corset

Paint brushes, deconstructed, inserted into “tail” for texture and volume

EOS – Radiology: Leading the Nation in New Technology

“Rady Children’s will be the first hospital in the United States to offer our patients imaging EOS (Electro-Optical Sciences), designed to capture head-to-toe images of patients in a standing position. The three-month installation period begins in January.

The EOS is critical because it emits 10 times less radiation than a standard CR scan and 1,000 times less than a standard CT scan. This is particularly important for children with spinal abnormalities, who will be monitored throughout their lifetime. The EOS also provides remarkable detail, enabling physicians to better diagnose and plan an effective course of treatment.

The EOS is just another step in the journey we began by purchasing the 64-Slice LightSpeed CT Scanner — a journey demonstrating our commitment to always offer our patients the most advanced Radiology treatments available.”

World Architecture News, May 6, 2009, Entry: WAN Awards 2009 – Healthcare

The new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Suite at Hillcrest Medical Center provides solutions to common patient complaints of anxiety, claustrophobia and noise, as well as creating an environment that will attract and help retain quality staff.

The design concept addresses the patient’s feeling of confinement during the scan, turning it into a more relaxed experience, accomplished through abstraction of the natural phenomenon of slot canyons because in nature, these spaces, while physically constrictive, are intriguing and beautiful.

The suite’s design carries the patient through a succession of warm intimate spaces culminating in the Scan Room. The Scan Room is a quiet place of wonder. The curved, wood-veneer ceiling intrigues the patient, while backlit alabaster panels extend the limits of the walls, opening up the space in a horizontal direction.

Sound-absorbing material associated with the ceiling system and walls mitigates the noise produced by the magnet. By using references to nature, such as slot canyons, in the design, the architects hoped to reduce the number of patient scan aborts due to claustrophobia and anxiety, and to have the patient come away with a positive experience from their MRI.
